Man-of-the-moment Andrew Johnston warmed up for his PGA Championship debut with a practice round alongside 2002 champion and Sky Sports commentator Rich Beem. The Sky Sports cameras followed Beef and Beemer along the way as Johnston shared some insight into his rapid rise to stardom since he earned his maiden European Tour title with a hard-fought victory on a brutally tough Valderrama layout at the Open de Espana in April. Beef knows the importance of giving back to the fans Johnstons infectious character and outgoing personality have made him a firm favourite with golf fans all over the world, as he proved when it took him over four hours to play 11 holes on Tuesday as he kept the masses of autograph hunters happy. The 27-year-old explains how his win in Spain gave him more belief in his abilities, and how he has enjoyed being regularly pitched against the worlds best players in the majors and WGCs. And, while he is keen to be regarded first and foremost as a top-class golfer, he is all-too aware of the need to give something back to the fans wherever he tees it up.Watch the video above to see Beef and Beemer gearing up for the PGA Championship at Baltusrol, and dont miss live coverage from all four days on Sky Sports 4 - your home of golf. Unfortunately for Toronto, that surge was too much to handle as the Stars scored six straight goals and ended the Marlies season with a 6-2 victory on Tuesday. Toronto had built a 2-0 lead on goals by Frazer McLaren and Peter Holland, but Texas charged back with a wild rally late in the second period to spark its trip to the Calder Cup final. Dickie Moore Jersey . "Youre next." Hardly. Iguodala tormented his former team with a game better than any he ever played in eight seasons with the 76ers. FRANKFURT, Germany -- Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund both lost in the Bundesliga on Saturday, leaving Bayern Munich the biggest beneficiary even though the defending champion wasnt even in the country. With Bayern playing the Club World Cup final in Morocco, Leverkusen and Dortmund could have gained some ground on the undefeated leader. But Leverkusen went down 1-0 at Werder Bremen and Dortmund lost 2-1 at home to Hertha Berlin, leaving Bayern seven points ahead of Leverkusen and 12 ahead of Dortmund, with one match in hand. Leverkusen lost its second straight and Dortmund its third consecutive at home as the two Champions League last-16 teams continued a slump. Dortmund, which has won only one of its last six matches and lost four of them, could drop from third place if Borussia Moenchengladbach beats Wolfsburg on Sunday. Elsewhere on the final day before the winter break, Shinji Okazaki scored twice for Mainz to win 3-2 in Hamburg, Eintracht Braunschweig edged Hoffenheim 1-0 and Freiburg beat Hannover 2-1. The defeat could cost Hannover coach Mirko Slomka his job. Hamburg and Braunschweig both finished their matches with 10 men. In the late match, Nuremberg drew 0-0 with Schalke to remain winless in the first half of the season. Werder snapped a five-match winless run when Santiago Garcia scored in the 74th minute. Aaron Hunts counter attack produced a chance for Cedric Maakiadi, who stumbled in the penalty area but Garcia was there to drill the ball home.dddddddddddd Dortmund got off to a fine start when Marco Reus used a long ball and an error by Hertha backup goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck to score from a sharp angle. But Adrian Ramos latched onto a low cross from Sami Allagui to score in the 23rd and Allagui secured the win just before half time after teenage defender Marian Sarr stumbled and lost the ball in front of the box. Allagui rounded goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and knocked the ball into the empty net. Hamburg fell to its fifth defeat at home despite taking the lead through Hakan Calhanoglu. But Mainz got the upper hand after the break, with Okazaki finishing a counter attack to level the score and then setting up Nicolai Mueller for the lead. Captain Rafael van der Vaart scored from a melee before Okazaki controlled a long ball with his head and slotted it home for the winner in injury time. Hamburgs Tomas Rincon was sent off in the 82nd with his second yellow card. Braunschweig notched its third win of the season when Torsten Oehrl converted a first-half penalty and held on despite the sending off of Timo Perthel. Freiburg got a brace from Admir Mehmedi to beat Hannover, which pulled one back through Leonardo Bittencourt in stoppage time. Hannover finished the first half of the season without a single point away from home. ORLANDO, Fla. - Jay Monahan was promoted to deputy commissioner of the PGA Tour on Tuesday, the first indication of a possible successor to Tim Finchem. Finchem was the last person to hold that position until he was appointed PGA Tour commissioner in 1994. "This step is being taken to further strengthen our organizational structure, enhance our management co-ordination and ultimately to continue to deliver on three key pieces of our core business — driving benefits to our players, growing the charity support in the communities where we play and doing our part in golf to help grow and protect this great game," Finchem said in a statement. "Jays new role in this key leadership position will help continue our momentum." Finchem, who completes 20 years as commissioner on June 1, signed a four-year extension through 2016. That would make him the longest-serving commissioner since the tour broke away from the PGA of America in 1969. He will be 69. Monahan played college golf at Trinity, and he earned a masters degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He previously worked for EMC in sponsorship and branding, at IMG as head of the Deutsche Bank Championship and as an executive vice-president at Fenway Sports Groups. He joined the tour in 2008 as director of The Players Championship and most recently was promoted to chief marketing officer, placing him in charge of corporate marketing and sponsor relations, one of the most critical positions on tour. His appointment as deputy commissioner takes effect April 1. Finchem agreed to his most recent four-year extension in 2012 after one of the more challenging economic periods of the tour. He made it through a recession by keeping tournaments fully sponsored, and even while Tiger Woods was struggling through a collapse in his personal life and with leg injuries, Finchem negotiated a nine-year television deal with NBC Sports and CBS Sports. But he suggested two years ago he probably wouldnt stay after 2016. "I never rule out possibilities," Finchem said in January 2012. "But the likelihood is this will probably be it for me. Theres other things I want to do." Thaddeus Young Jersey . Sources tell TSN that union executives travelled to select CFL cities Monday to open dialogue with players and answer questions. HOUSTON -- The Texans have a starting quarterback. Now they need star wide receiver Andre Johnson back in the fold. New coach Bill OBrien named Ryan Fitzpatrick the starter, an announcement overshadowed somewhat by Johnsons absence Tuesday on the first day of a mandatory three-day mini-camp. Johnson hasnt participated in any of the teams voluntary off-season workouts and said last month that he wouldnt attend these workouts, either. On Tuesday, he missed the opening day of workouts that are the last before training camp in late July. Fitzpatrick signed with the team in the off-season a day before Matt Schaub was traded to the Raiders and OBrien made him compete with the three other quarterbacks on the roster for the starting job. "He definitely earned it," OBrien said. "He earned it with his preparation. He earned it with his accuracy. He earned it with his command at the line of scrimmage." A former starter for the Buffalo Bills, the nine-year veteran started nine games last season for Tennessee after Jake Locker was injured. Fitzpatrick threw for 2,454 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. "This is where I wanted to be," Fitzpatrick said. "I wanted another shot at it. I wanted another chance to be the guy." OBrien said this decision doesnt mean that things cant change as the year progresses. "Everybody on our team every single day has to go out there and earn their spot on the team, earn their starting spot," OBrien said. "So quarterback is no different. We have confidence in his ability to lead our football team. Hes done a really good job in the off-season of picking up our system and hes executed it well." Case Keenum, who took over as starter when Schaub was benched last season, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage are vying to be the backup to Fitzpatrick. "With all three of those guys we need just a little bit more consistency," OBrien said. "It has nothing to do with effort or work ethic. Those guys have all worked extremely hard. Theyve all done what weve asked them to do." Johnson has said he has not asked for a trade but last month wondered if Houston was "still the place for me." The 32-year-old receiver is Houstons longest-tenured player after joining the franchise in its second season. OBrien said that he has spoken to and text messaged with Johnson, but wouldnt reveal any details. He said he isnt concerned that Johnson has missed the implementation of his new offence. "I believe based on the different systems that hes been in that hed be able to pick up on our system," OBrien said. "Hes a bright guy, a very bright guy and a guy thats done a lot in this league. So I think hed be able to figure it out." OBrien also doesnt think that Johnsons absence is taking away from the rest of the teams work. "Its really about the guys that are here and theyre working extremely hard," OBrien said. "They dont seem to be too distracted." With Johnson out, Houstons young group of receivers is led by last years first-round pick DeAndre Hopkins and includes third-year players DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin. "Weve thrown a lot at them," OBrien said. "Its not easy to play receiver in this system and those guys seem to be getting better every day." Houston had preseason Super Bowl aspirations last year, but wound up with an NFL-worst 2-14 record. Rather than choosing a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, they chose defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney, who is recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia and also not at the mini-camp. PINEHURST, N.C. -- A tough Pinehurst No. 2 tried to make a game out of this U.S. Open. Martin Kaymer always had an answer. Already with one bogey on his card, Kaymers tee shot on No. 4 was so deep into the trees that his golf ball settled in sandy patch that had been washed out by rain, stacked up against 6 inches of pine straw. With nowhere to go and no relief available, he turned to USGA President Tom OToole and said, "If you have a way to play it, Ill follow you." Kaymer navigated his way out of trouble just fine. He escaped with a bogey by getting up-and-down from 165 yards. He followed with an eagle with a 7-iron from 202 yards out of more sand and weeds. And a birdie on the final hole gave him a 2-over 72 and a five-shot lead in a U.S. Open that finally lived up to its reputation Saturday. "I kept it very well together," said Kaymer, who was at 8-under 202. Now he has to do it one more time, with a different cast of challengers behind him. Rickie Fowler, with teen idol status in American golf, birdied the par-3 17th hole and shot 67 to get into the final group of a major for the first time. Even more unlikely was the other player at 3-under 207 -- Erik Compton, the two-time heart transplant recipient who considers it a victory just to be playing golf. Compton ran off five birdies and an eagle for a 67 "If I were to win the tournament, it would be obviously something that would be extremely special, not only for me, but for my family and for those who have been around me, and I think also for the community and those who have been through some tough times," Compton said. "I might just sail off and never play golf again." Even so, this tournament is in the hands of a 29-year-old German who kept his cool on a broiling day of some wicked pin positions. Only one player in U.S. Open history has lost a five-shot lead in the final round, and that Mike Brady in 1919. "It would be nice if they make it difficult again," Kaymer said of the pins, several of which were on the edges of the Donald Ross turtleback greens. "Because then its all about ball-striking. I enjoy playing those courses a lot more than just a putting competition. ... So I hope they put them in tough positions. Not as tough as today. It would be nice if we could have some kind of a chance once in a while. But that is what you get at the U.S. Open. Its OK. You just have to play very well." Only six players remained under par, and considering no one has come from more than seven shots behind in the final round to win a U.S. Open, they might be the only ones left with a realistic chance to catch Kaymer. Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson each shot 70 and were at 2-under 208. Brandt Snedeker had a 72 and was another shot behind. Asked how much that birdie mattered on the 18th hole, Kaymer said, "One shot." "If youre four shots, five shots, six shots, if you play a golf course like this, it can be gone very quickly," he said. "You could see it today. So the challenge tomorrow is to keep going and not try to defend anything. So well see how it will react tomorrow, how the body feels and how I handle the situation." Kaymer had his way with a softer, gentler Pinehurst No. 2 by becoming the first player to open with 65s to set the 36-hole record at 10-under 130. Some players wondered what tournament he was playing. There was no doubt what it was on Saturday. "Theyve set it up so that no one can go low," Retief Goosen said after a 71. "Some of the pins look like theyre about to fall off the greens." Toru Taniguchi shot an 88. Brendon Todd, playing in the final group with Kaymer, had a 79. Phil Mickelson had a 73 and was 13 shots out of the lead. Hell have to wait until next year to pursue the only major keeping him from the career Grand Slam. Adam Scott, the world No. 1, made bogey on all but one of the par 3s and was 11 shots behind. Kaymer nearly joined the parade of players going the wrong direction. He ended an amazing streak of 29 holes without a bogey by failing to get up-and-down from short of the second green. Trouble really was brewing on the fourth hole, when he pulled his tee shot into the trees and couldnt play his next shot. After being denied relief, he took a one-shot penalty drop and punched out to the fairway. From 165 yards, he hit his fourth shot to 15 feet right of the flag and lightly pumped his fist -- big emotion for Kaymer -- when it dropped for bogey. The other mistakes were sloppy. Kaymer hit a birdie putt off the green on the par-3 sixth and had to scramble for bogey. On the back nine, he twice took three putts for bogey, once from off the green. But he closed with his best shot of a long day, and still had control of this U.S. Open. Mike Brady is the only other player to lose a five-shot lead. That was in 1919 at Brae Burn Country Club in Massachusetts. He shot 80 in the last round, and Walter Hagen beat him the next day in a playoff. Kaymer is all about looking forward, not back at history, hopeful of winning his second major before turning 30. In the last 20 years, only Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els have done that. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the updates. Be-Deviled Devils beat writer Randy Miller of NJ.com makes a case for New Jersey to acquire veteran forward Daniel Briere from the Montreal Canadiens, saying that Briere may not be happy with his playing situation in Montreal, could be a top-line centre with the Devils and would be closer to his sons who live in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Miller suggests that swapping Briere for defenceman Anton Volchenkov could work, as Volchenkov carries a $4.25 million cap hit through 2015-16 and Briere has a $4 million hit through next season. But not so fast... TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun says that while Briere wasnt happy about spending time in the press box, hes had an impact since returning to the lineup and the situation with both sides seems to have settled down for now. A source told him that a conversation Briere had with GM Marc Bergevin reassured him of his role and value to the team and with forward Alex Galchenyuk out for six weeks, Briere now should have a chance at regular ice time. Canucks Want List As written by LeBrun on ESPN.com, the Vancouver Canucks would like to add a centre before the trade deadline and, if not a centre, a top-nine winger. LeBrun says that Brad Richardson has been terrific as a No. 3 center for the Canucks, but feels if they can have him centring the fourth line and can upgrade the third center spot, theyd feel better about their playoff chances. If the cant they could keep Richardson in the No. 3 hole and upgrade the fourth-line centre job. He adds that the Canucks are deep on defence throughout the organization and could put a blueliner out there to make a meaningful deal. Patient Penguins The Globe and Mails Eric Duhatschek writes that the Pittsburgh Penguins could be interested in acquiring help on the wing with veterans like Ales Hemsky, Michael Cammalleri or Matt Moulson available, but will want to see how rookie Beau Bennett plays coming back off injury first.dddddddddddd Hes expected back at some point next month and Duhatschek adds that GM Ray Shero would like to have him play a short stint in the minors before NHL play starts up again after the Olympics. The Penguins will expected to have Paul Martin back in the lineup by then, which leaves them with a surplus of defencemen. Sizzling Sens With six wins in their last eight games, the Ottawa Senators are in a dogfight for a postseason spot and re-signed general manager Bryan Murray is looking for another piece - most likely a forward - to make a run this spring. "Just watching the progress in the last month and a little bit, I think that the objective now is certainly more than it was a month before," Murray said on a conference call. "We are available to make a deal." On The Island According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the New York Islanders have had some contract discussions with Thomas Vaneks agent, but both sides are waiting to see what direction the team goes in down the stretch. Im sure well talk, but Im trying to stay out of it," Vanek said. "Until something gets close, I need to focus on the games." Vanek is in the final year of a seven-year, $50 million contract he signed with the Buffalo Sabres. Staying In Denver? As per Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, centre Ryan OReilly and the Colorado Avalanche have agreed to wait until the summer to discuss a new contract. OReilly, whos making $6.5 million this season, is still a restricted free agent in July. On Feb. 28 of last year, the Avalanche matched a two-year, $10 million offer sheet from the Calgary Flames meaning the team cant trade OReilly for one year from the date they matched the offer. To hear Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins explain it, Lars Eller did his club a huge favour to help inspire the Oilers to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Canadiens on Tuesday night. Prior to the game, the 24-year-old Eller was asked what to expect from his opponents by Chris Stevenson of Sun Media. "It can be anything, you know? They (the Oilers) play a little bit like a junior team, I think, sometimes," Eller said. "They take a lot of risks, a lot of chances, theyre a little all over the place. Theres not a lot of structure, always, in their game." Well as things go in hockey, the comments made it straight to the proverbial bulletin board in the Edmonton dressing room. The players were made aware of it, and afterwards Eakins explained the mood of his club. "Its games like that where you dont even need to go play them. Youve got a player like Lars Eller running his mouth before the game," Eakins told the media. "It makes for great banter in our dressing room and a great motivation. So we thank Lars Eller for his comments before the game. Awesome. "They might as well have sent me over a fruit basket and a bottle of wine. I was like, man, that is just perfect. That was a really great present that Mr. Eller laid on us today," said Eakins. Eakins, in his first season behind an NHL bench, described his thought process after the Oilers fell behind 2-0 after the first period. "I knew (the game) was going to turn (in our favour). That is a total Hockey God thing, and Im sure that young man has learnt his lesson and I highly doubt that youll see anything like that out of his mouth again," said Eakins. On Wednesday, Eller spoke to the media in Montreal and gave his side of the story. "It wasnt my intention to say something disrespectful to the Oilers," explained Eller. "I was asked about their style of game...I said a bunch of things. One thing was taken out and highlighted. "Im not the kind of guy who trash-talks in the media." Adrian Dantley Jersey . For a fleeting moment on Friday when I saw that the New York Yankees had designated Vernon Wells for assignment, I wondered if the Blue Jays would take him back or even want him back. After all, the Jays are looking for a right-hand hitting platoon partner for Adam Lind. Wells fits the bill in that department, but outside of a solid six weeks or so sto tart with the Yankees last season, his numbers over the past two years with the Los Angeles Angels and in New York have been in serious decline. Consider this, though: Last season Wells hit .281 against the Jays with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. At Rogers Centre, he batted .357 with two homers and six runs batted in. Granted, both are extremely small sample sizes, but the pride he showed facing his original team has to count for something. Then, there is, of course, the economics. Of the $21 mill. Wells is owed in the final year of his contract, the Angels are responsible for $18.6 mill. Its possible, then, that after the Yankees share is factored in, a team could get Vernon Wells for $500,000 for this season. He has said in the recent past, he will retire after this contract is up, so there isnt a major risk involved. In fact, its the same situation the Blue Jays found themselves in with lefty reliever Darren Oliver last season and now Oliver has retired. The Blue Jays are hoping that after back surgery Melky Cabrera will return to form and play left field, but Wells would offer insurance in left and, as mentioned earlier, could split the DH duties with Adam Lind. I dont know that it will happen, and actually doubt that it will, but there is another angle to consider and thats the Blue Jays history of bringing back veterans over the years. I havent done an in depth study on this, but I doubt any team in baseball has brought back more franchise veterans than the Blue Jays have. Just consider some of the names. Alfredo Griffin, the Blue Jays shortstop in the late 70s and early 80s, was traded away to the Oakland Athletics for would-be closer Bill Caudill. Griffin was brought back as a free agent and collected World Series rings with the club in 92 and 93 as a utility infielder. Tony Fernandez, who succeeded Griffin at short, was dealt to the San Diego Padres along with Fred McGriff in the franchise changing-deal for Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter. Fernandez was brought back in a trade in time to play for the World Series winners in 1993. Dave Stieb, the franchises first ace, was out of the game for four years when the Jays brought him back for a comeback in 1998 that lasted through the end of the season. Stieb went 1-2 with a couple of saves at age 40 in a swing role, before ultimately retiring for a second and final time. Pat Borders, stalwart catcher and MVP of the 92 World Series, returned as a free agent for a brief stint in 1999 and actually added one more homer to his Blue Jays resume. And there were others, Pat Hentgen returned as a pitcher and later as a coach. Lloyd Moseby returned as a coach, as did Pete Walker, who pitched for the team and is now the pitching coach. It goes even higher up the ladder than that. Cito Gaston, who managed the Jays to both of their World Series titles and then was fired late in the 1997 season, came back as a hitting coach under Jim Fregosi and then managed the team again for two-plus seasons. John Gibbons, too, has managed the team twice and Paul Beeston has been with the Blue Jays on two separate occasions sandwiched around a brief time working in the commisioners office. All of this doesnt even include the rollercoaster journeys of lefty David Wells and the "Beeg Mon" Rico Carty, who both played for the Jays multiple times The Jays have already brought back one storied veteran this season in Roy Halladay, who signed with the club for a day in the off-season so he could officially retire with the team that drafted him and helped forge his career. I dont know what, if anything, Vernon Wells has left, but at worst he is a very cheap risk and, at best, another classy Blue Jays veteran who would look good ending his career in Toronto. Players can begin filing for arbitration on Tuesday. The Blue Jays have three players eligible in lefty reliever Brett Cecil, swing starter Esmil Rogers and outfielder Colby Rasmus. Rasmuss situation is the most interesting, since he is going into his final season before he can become an unrestricted free agent. GM Alex Anthopoulos appears willing to let this one play off well into the season before deciding on whether or not to re-sign Rasmus to a long-term deal. Based on what the Blue Jays have done the last two seasons, that is probably the right decision. Justin Jones Jersey . Interestingly, the culprits were not rookies, but well paid, experienced pros. The first gaffe came in the 24th minute of arguably the biggest early season MLS game in history between Seattle and Toronto. Davis had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Roberts scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, and New Orleans beat the Atlanta Hawks 105-100 on Wednesday night. "Im always telling our guys, Everybody has written you guys off, so what do you have to lose? Just go out there and play. Ive got your back either way," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. Paul Millsap had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost two in a row. DeMarre Carroll added 22 points. "Roberts made some big shots," said Hawks guard Jeff Teague, who had 11 points and 13 assists. "We just got stagnant on defence. Our intensity on defence just wasnt there. We didnt play with attention to detail in the last couple of plays." Davis and Roberts made Atlanta pay, each scoring six points in the final 3:40. Davis has been stellar all season, and his performance against Atlanta marked the 16th time hes had at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in the same game. Roberts only recently moved into a starting role at point guard because of Jrue Holidays stress fracture in his right shin. Roberts made only one of five shots in the first half before turning in one of the best second halves of his young career. "Hes growing up and he understands when to make plays," Davis said. Roberts did have one glaring error when he had a turnover that led to a score during a late 7-0 Atlanta run that trimmed the Hawks 10-point deficit to three with a little less than a minute left. Roberts made up for it with a running, off-balance floater on New Orleans next possession to make it 100-95 with 20 seconds to go. "That was a tough turnover right there," Roberts said. "I just try to move on and focus on the nextt play.dddddddddddd. ... I was going to get it back and I was able to make that floater and finish them off." Eric Gordon added 18 points and Anthony Morrow 16 for the Pelicans, who have won six of their last nine games. Atlanta was in position to win when Mike Scotts 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run and gave the Hawks an 83-76 lead with 7:45 to play, but the Pelicans then ran off nine straight points to regain the lead. "Thats a tough loss for our group," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said, referring to his clubs blown fourth-quarter lead. "Our execution needs to improve when were in that situation." The Hawks led for the entire third quarter, taking their largest lead at 54-47 on Carrolls 3 12 seconds into the period. Scott hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Hawks, while Lou Williams had 11 points. The teams stayed within single digits of each other for nearly the entire game. The largest lead for either team was 10 for New Orleans after Davis free throws late in the fourth quarter. That lead lasted all of 8 seconds before Scott hit a 3. Atlanta had 14 3s on 30 attempts from deep, with Carroll hitting four. The Hawks had one stretch in which they hit nine straight 3-point attempts -- their last four of the second quarter and first five of the third. The Pelicans, however, scored 20 points on free throws, while Atlanta had only 10. New Orleans also outrebounded Atlanta 50-38. One rumour circulating around the NFL after the Draft this past weekend was that the Cleveland Browns originally intended to draft Teddy Bridgewater 22nd overall, but changed the name on the card to Johnny Manziel at the last second. Whether its true or not, and the Browns are denying it, its a good thing Cleveland went with the former Heisman Trophy winner over Bridgewater, or they could have been dealing with an unhappy rookie QB. In a radio interview with "The Dan Patrick Show", Bridgewater said he didnt want to be drafted by the Browns, and that he had always felt more comfortable with the Minnesota Vikings, who selected him 10 picks later at No. 32. "There was a chance (getting drafted by the Browns), but I actually told my agent thats not the place where I wanted to be,” Bridgewater told "The Dan Patrick Show". And that left the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner worried whether his future with the quarterback-needy Bills will last past this weekend. "Its disappointing. You have an opportunity, and you go out there and you dont play as well as you want to," Leinart said after struggling in a 35-13 preseason-ending loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. "I was thankful to be here, and well see what happens. Obviously, after that performance it cant be anything good I would think. But well see." Coach Doug Marrone saw enough of Leinart to yank him after five possessions, and after the 2006 first-round draft pick threw his second interception. Leinart completed 3 of 10 passes for 11 yards, and looked very much like someone who had the benefit of just three practices since signing Sunday. Leinarts performance doesnt make it easy on Marrone when it comes to making his final cuts by Saturday. "Wed love to say, Hey, wed love to have had him for a couple of more days, sure, but thats not how everything played out," Marrone said. "Its not a great situation, but it is an opportunity." Bills general manager Doug Whaley told The Associated Press hell evaluate the game film on Leinart before making a decision. He then added: "Im sure (Leinart) is more disappointed than anybody." The Bills signed Leinart and acquired Thaddeus Lewis in a trade with Detroit on Sunday after losing their top two quarterbacks to injuries. First-round selection EJ Manuel is recovering from a left knee injury, and hasnt been ruled out to play in Buffalos opener against New England on Sept. 8. Veteran Kevin Kolb is out indefinitely with a concussion. And the news got worse for Buffalo (2-2). Marrone announced safety Jairus Byrd has a foot injury, and has travelled to North Carolina to be evaluated by specialist Robert Anderson. Byrd is a two-time Pro Bowl safety who missed the entire off-season before signing his one-year, $6.9 million franchise tender last week. And Buffalo lost veteran reserve guard Doug Legursky to what is feared to be a significant left knee injury. The mood was much better in the visitors locker room, where the Lions (3-1) made quick work of another AFC East opponent a week after a 40-9 rout of New England. The only complaint coach Jim Schwartz had was how diffficult it became to evaluate players with the Lions ahead 35-3 at the half.dddddddddddd. "We really needed to see some of those wide receivers," Schwartz said. "It was difficult because youre still throwing the ball when youre up by 32 points." With receivers Calvin Johnson and Ryan Broyles sitting out, Nate Burleson and Patrick Edwards had inconsistent outings. Burleson had a Drew Stafford pass go off his hands that led to an interception on the Lions first possession. Edwards dropped two passes from Stafford before scoring on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Shaun Hill. "If we were getting stopped, guys werent getting open or Matt couldnt get the ball off, thats when problems need to be addressed," Burleson said. "But from a physical standpoint, all we need to do as receivers is catch the ball." Hill and third-string quarterback Kellen Moore had two touchdown passes apiece. Hill also hit Kris Durham for a 6-yard touchdown. Both of Moores touchdown passes were to running back Theo Riddick. Joique Bell also scored on a 23-yard run. The only bright sign for Buffalo came about 90 minutes before the game. Thats when Manuel took the field and threw a number of passes. Marrone continued to leave the door open for Manuel to be ready for the opener. However, Marrone cautioned that the rookie out of Florida State will need to be practicing by Wednesday. The Bills are off until returning to practice Sunday. If Manuels not ready, undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel is in line to start. Since the NFL merger in 1970, no undrafted rookie has ever opened a season as the starter directly out of college. Tuel was given the night off because the Bills were wary of losing another quarterback to injury. Lewis fared slightly better than Leinart. He finished 7 of 16 for 132 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Easley in the fourth quarter. Leinart blamed himself. "I expect more out of myself," he said. "I have expectations for myself. Whether I was here for three days or three years, you cant do that." Brian Joynt walked to lead off the inning and Ian Gac was hit by a pitch. Kevin Howard reached first on a fielders choice, which moved Joynt to third and caused Gac to be out at second. Joynt then scored on an error when Howard stole second, which led to him scoring on a ground out. An inning later, the Goldeyes broke the shutout. You have to make him pitch to the top in the zone and if youre swinging at stuff down in the zone, you have zero chance of hitting that kind of stuff." Joynt hit a two-run home run off Goldeyes reliever Kyle Bellamy in the top of the eighth to put Lincoln up 4-1. Anderson was the hard-luck loser after giving up just two runs – one of which was earned – in 6 2/3 innings of work. "Other than the top of the fourth, he was phenomenal today," Forney said of his starting pitcher. Fleming tossed seven innings for the win, while Marshall Schuler pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season. Pineda had a two-hit to lead the Goldeyes, who only managed five hits in the contest. Winnipeg will now head to Sioux Falls for four games against the Canaries, starting Monday night at 7 p.m. Matt Jackson (2-1, 3.50) will take the ball for Winnipeg. LOS ANGELES -- The estranged wife of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will fight to retain her 50 per cent ownership stake in the team, her lawyer said Thursday, adding an unwanted twist to the NBAs plan to force new ownership on the franchise. Shelly Sterlings attorney, Pierce ODonnell, said his client "will not agree to a forced or involuntary seizure of her interest." "As her lawyers we will fight vigorously to defend her property rights," he said. ODonnell said Mrs. Sterling has no interest in managing the Clippers and wants a new investor group to come in with a professional management team. ODonnell also told The Associated Press that Shelly Sterling has been separated from her husband for the last year and is considering divorce. There is no record of legal separation documents being filed, though ODonnell said the couple is living apart. Last week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling from the NBA for life and urged league owners to force him to sell the team. The move came after a recording surfaced in which Sterling made racist comments, telling friend V. Stiviano that he didnt want her to bring black people to Clippers games. At a news conference announcing the decision, Silver said no decision had been made regarding whether Mrs. Sterling or any other Sterling family member will be allowed to retain an ownership position. ODonnell said he spoke with NBA officials Thursday morning but declined to elaborate. He said Mrs. Sterling has been working co-operatively with Silver and his staff and supported his announcement seeking a new chief executive officer for the team and the NBAs decision to place longtime team President Andy Roeser on leave. NBA spokesman Mike Bass said the league wouldnt comment on its discussions. ODonnell said Mrs. Sterling "abhors" her husbands comments and that "the Sterlings may share the same last name, but she does not share his values on race." The Sterlings have been married 57 years, ODonnell said. "We abhor guilt by association in America," ODonnell said. "The sins of the husband cannot be imputed to the wife or children." Shelly and Donald Sterling faced allegations that they discriminated against tenants based on race in Los Angeles according to a lawsuit filed by U.S. Department of Justice in 2006. The Sterlings, who at the time owned and managed about 119 apartment buildings or 5,000 apartments throughout Los Angeles County, agreed to settle the suit for $2.725 million. The settlement also included two suits filed by former tenants at one of the properties, including an African-American family and an interracial married couple with biracial children, who alleged the Sterlings demolished their private yards among other actions because of their race, according to the Justice Department. "The charges against her by former tenants are false, unfounded and were never ever determined to be valid in a court of law," ODonnell said. He said the case was settled without any admission of liability. "She doesnt have a racist bone in her body," ODonnell said. Clippers coach Doc Rivers said Thursday at the teams training facility that "it would be a very hard situation" if Mrs. Sterling retained her portion of ownership in the team. "I guarantee you every person wouldnt be on board with that," Rivers said. "Whether I would or not, Im not going to say." ODonnell said Mrs. Sterling hasnt been asked to stay away from games and will not. She is an ardent Clippers fan and plans to attend Friday nights playoff game against Oklahoma City. Rivers said "thats her choice. She can be a ticket buyer or whatever." Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a former NBA All-Star guard who was asked to serve as a spokesman for NBA players after the Sterling scandal broke, didnt immediately return a call seeking comment. That pair still held sway after three-quarters in 1:20.3 and was still one and one-half lengths in front, but JK Endofanera got rolling late on the outside and prevailed. SURPRISE, Ariz. -- If Yu Darvish is feeling any pressure after leading the majors in strikeouts last season, it isnt showing. The Texas Rangers ace was even in a joking mood Tuesday at spring training. Darvish wisecracked that the New York Yankees might have paid too much for fellow Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka by giving him a seven-year, $155 million contract on top of a $20 million posting fee to the Rakuten Golden Eagles. The deal made Darvish No. 2 when it comes to Japanese players in the majors: He has a six-year, $56 million deal signed before the 2012 season after the Rangers paid $51.7 million to Hokkaido for the right to negotiate with him. "I dont know the details of the posting system, but I think the Yankees gave him a little bit too much," Darvish said with a chuckle through his interpreter during his first spring training session with reporters. Even before the session was done, the remark was all over social media and the Rangers released a statement to make sure everyone knew Darvish was kidding. "I am sorry if anyone took my comment seriously about Masahiro Tanaka at the press conference," Darvish said in the statement. "I assumed by the reaction in the room that everyone knew I was joking." The 27-year-old Darvish could opt out of his contact after five years if he wins a Cy Young Award and potentially get a contract exceeding that of Tanaka. He came close last year, finishing second to Max Scherzer in the balloting after leading the majors with 277 strikeouts -- the most since Randy Johnson struck out 290 in 2004 with Arizona. Darvish, who manager Ron Washington has already named the opening day starter, was 13-9 with a 2.83 ERA in 32 starts last season. "If we score him runs, he might win 35 games and hes only going to get 32 starts," Washington said. Darvish lost four 1-0 decisions, the first pitcher to do that in a season since Orel Hershiser with the 1989 Dodgers. "Never once did he ever make any whimpers of, Boy it sure would be nice to get some runs, never once," pitching coach Mike Maddux said. "Thats the kind of teammate he is. Hes going to go out and do the best he can and wants everyone else to the best they can." The Rangers averaged 3.08 runs per game in Darvishs final 23 starts. "The game is something you cant control, so you cant be pessimistic or optimistic," Darvish said. "The main thing is to keep yourself healthy. If youre healthy enough, I think numbers are going to follow. The outcome is something that is a result of having a healthy season. I cant really control what goes on in a game situation." Darvish went on the 15-day disabled list last July with a right shoulder strain and was bothered by back nerve irritation in September. Darvish said he shied away from heavy lifting during the off-season to help the back. His lack of fastball command, which gets his pitch count up early, has been a concern. "Youll probably see during the course of the season how much I have improved," Darvish said. "Im more relaxed and I can do many things at my own pace and Im aware of whats going on and people know me better than in the past." An improved Darvish could equate to a blockbuster contract. No joke. Notes: RHP Tanner Scheppers (back spasms) and LHP Matt Harrison (stiff neck) were held out of throwing Tuesday. .2B Jurickson Profars right shoulder is still stiff, preventing him from throwing. Justise Winslow added 16 points and Quinn Cook picked up 15 for the Blue Devils (12-0), who will put their unblemished record on the line in their ACC opener on Saturday against Boston College. We played well and we beat a really good team today. Theyre a hard team to defend, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. We played so hard in the second half and so together. Im really pleased with the result. Karl Cochran posted 13 points and five rebounds for the Terriers (9-4), who also begin their conference slate three days from now. I was really proud, Wofford head coach Mike Young said. I cant say there have been many times in my career when we got our fannies whipped by 29 or whatever it was and I was proud. After four ties, the visitors led only once in the contest, 15-14, with just over nine minutes gone in the first half after Cochran drained a triple. Duke surged ahead with the next eight points and largely maintained that close margin throuugh intermission.dddddddddddd. Another Cochran triple pulled Wofford within 26-24, but a three-point play by Okafor provided breathing room and the Blue Devils went to the break up 41-34. Amile Jeffersons shot provided the hosts a 48-34 edge less than two minutes into the second half. Eric Garcias bucket made it 52-43 just over two minutes later, but Duke embarked on an 11-2 run to put away its challengers for good. Jefferson capped the surge at 63-45 with 10:21 remaining after grabbing a defensive board off a Spencer Collins miss from long distance then taking it the length of the floor for a layup. Duke refused to take its foot off the gas in the latter stages, and back-to- back threes by Grayson Allen and Cook capped the rout. Game Notes Duke extended its streak to 116 victories over non-conference opponents on its home floor ... Wofford fell to 0-21 all-time against nationally-ranked foes ... Okafor was 11-of-13 from the floor, but missed three of his five chances at the free-throw line ... The Terriers handed out just nine assists and committed 13 turnovers. When it comes to balancing training with media obligations, few mixed martial artists keep a schedule as hectic as Ronda Rousey. On top of pushing herself in the gym before each fight, the UFC womens bantamweight champion is never too far from the spotlight. In between bouts, Rousey has even taken to filling downtime with roles in films like The Expendables 3, Entourage and Fast & Furious 7. Going into her upcoming title defence against Canadian Alexis Davis in the co-main event of UFC 175 in Las Vegas Saturday, Rouseys once again running the press gauntlet. Though her packed timetable would be enough to make some fighters cringe, Rousey has a secret weapon working to her advantage. “I dont really do that well with downtime,” Rousey said during a recent media conference call. “So Im always in the gym regardless. A lot of fighters like to have their fight and then go chill out for a month or two. I get in trouble for sneaking back into the gym sometimes two days after a fight. Im just always in shape and always ready. I dont really like resting too much.” The cause of Rouseys desire to never stray too far from the gym is two-fold. Though there is nothing more satisfying than violently dispatching high-level challengers, this sensation is often fleeting for the California native. It doesnt take long before she once again gets the itch to compete. “The high after a win is what I enjoy the most, not sitting around and resting,” Rousey said. “I clearly only enjoy the rest while that high is still lingering. Its only so long that I can enjoy sitting on the couch and eating as much pie as I want before going to the gym and pressing repeat. I really need that big goal and obstacle to be excited about what Im doing.” On top of her competitive drive, Rousey simply knows that in order to stay on-point, she must fight frequently. She admitted to learning this the hard way, after a 10-month layoff prior to her December bout with Miesha Tate resulted in some unwanted ring rust. “We dont really have the luxury boxers have where, if the champion takes a long break off, they can have a tune-up fight to get ready for another big title fight,” Rousey said. “I just have title fights to keep from getting that ring rust.” Next on her hit list, Rousey aims to net her fourth consecutive title defence by besting Davis. Currently riding a five-fight win streak — three of which have come under the UFC banner — Davis has flown under the radar somewhat and could offer tough opposition wherever the fight may go. Rousey said she isnt taking the Port Colborne, Ont. native lightly. “Alexis is definitely the most well-rounded fighter Ive ever come up against,” Rousey said. “Shes one of the most experienced and her coaching (staff) is some of the best Ive ever come up against. “I think the greatest challenge is: whatever tools she does have, I know that shell use them in the most intelligent way possible. Being that she is well rounded, she has a lot of tools to pick from.” Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the bout will play out once the action hits the mat, as Davis is arguably the most experienced ground fighter Rousey has ever been paired up against. As well as sporting a Muay Thai striking background, Davis holds black belts in both Brazilian jiu jitsu and Japanese Jujutsu. A 2008 Olympic judo bronze medalist, Rousey said she aims to represent her discipline and secure bragging rights by taking out Davis. “When I first started watching MMA that was one thing that pissed me off so much, everyone assumed that everything would beat judo,” Rousey began. “Everyone would be like, Any wrestler can beat a judo player. Any jiu jitsu player can beat a judo player. I was just really annoyed by the complete lack of respect that the sport got. I see that changing definitely. “You can definitely get away without having any ground game in judo, but if you are the type of person ... that can submit people in judo — I mean, youve only got a couple seconds to make that work. If youre the type of person that does actually make it work on the ground in judo, youre one of the best in the world. Im happy to really get the opportunity to showcase that.” Should she get the job done against Davis, Rousey said she plans on taking a much-needed break. However, it will remain to be seen whether she can enjoy her time away from the cage. “Id like to fight again on New Years and take a little break before then,” Rousey said, “but the UFC knows if theres an emergency or they need me, Ill step up on 24-hours notice.” Authentic Detroit Lions Jerseys . Its been a successful Games for Canada, which will finish near the top of the medal standings again. From repeat gold medal winners to multiple medal winners to undefeated teams to acts that define the Olympic spirit, there are many solid candidates who could be considered to receive the honour. There is one common thread amongst all MMA fights. If one fighter gases, he usually gets beat up pretty bad from that point on. My experience says there is no feeling worse than being man handled by a professional MMA fighter. As a strength coach, I like to actively train with the fighters I work with. Well I used to. As long as I live, I will never forget the feeling of working out and wrestling for the first time with Lew Polley, Jesse Taylor, Thierry Sokoudjou, Dan Henderson, and Tarec Saffiedine. My first time working at Quest as a strength coach had me learning a lot about wrestling. I took part in an "easy session" and at the end of the15 minute warm-up, I got teamed up with Hendo. I was tired, he was just starting. At 20 minutes I had been tossed more than 20 times, and had tapped to his clinch. There was more. Next stop was Sokoudjou. At 21 minutes into practice, my "friend" tossed me about three feet with the fastest hip toss Id ever seen. I laid on the mat in a pool of sweat, needed a minute to love life again. While I took some deep breaths Sokoudjou skipped. We got a new partner ever five minutes. I was everyones "break". It went on like this for 39 more minutes, one beating to another. Single leg takedown drills, wrestling for top position. I never once threatened anyone for position. I did however, threaten to throw up on Jesse. I think back to that practice every time I train in the gym. I realize that no matter how physically fit I get, its a whole different world to be on a mat and working with pros. The sport of MMA is unbelievably physically demanding. To this day, four years later, I have not been able to mirror the intensity. There is one solid trick to try to get as close as possible. Disrupt your breathing. If you have never played sports with a mouth guard then you have missed out on something special. However, the athletes I work with in MMA are using a brand new guard by SISU and its a game changger.dddddddddddd The athletes can actually breath, talk, and drink while its in. Putting in a mouth guard while you run is the most basic way to change your breathing, and raise the intensity. If you jump to YouTube, you can see some of my videos where I train with the "Training Mask". The goal is not to create high altitude training, the goal is to make it tough to get a full deep breath. That forces your intercostal muscles, and diaphragm to work harder. Its the same situation as having a 200 + lbs MMA superstar on your chest, or with their arms digging into your ribs. When that happens, you cant get a full breath. When you do your sprint training, try putting in a mouth guard or incorporating a training mask device. That was the focus for me this week. Tuesday and Thursday I did my cardio sessions with a SISU mouth guard, and they went like this. 10 minutes to warm up on the treadmill, adjust to the mouth guard. - 8 x 20 second on 10 second rest sprints on the treadmill. 10 on incline, and fast as safely possible- 8 x 30 second on 30 seconds of rest bike sprints- Then back to the treadmill- 4 x 30 second of back peddling 15 seconds of rest. Incline at 6 and as fast as safely possible- Then a 5 minutes jog without a mouth guard, and then 5 minutes to cool down Takes roughly 30 minutes to get it all done. It feels terrible while its going on, but the recover and energy burst from finishing will be a huge boost to your entire day. I said it before in this article, you cant boo any athlete until you try the basics of the training. Most pros can do this type of cardio with their eyes closed. They gas out because there is nothing that can prepare them for the entire event, and the intensity of being in a real life fight. Try this in your training, and get just a small taste of what its like to be as fit as a fighter. Add a mouth guard, or a training mask. Next week, Im breaking out the weight vest. Its time to get to the next level. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays overcame a masterful performance by David Price. Price allowed only a first-inning RBI triple to Brandon Guyer in his first start against his former team, and Alex Cobb and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep. "Its weird," Guyer said. "Ive never seen a win like that." Ben Zobrist reached on a throwing error by shortstop Eugenio Suarez and scored on Guyers hit. Price then retired his final 23 batters, nine on strikeouts, to finish an eight-inning complete game. Cobb (9-6) scattered two hits, walked two and struck out six over seven innings, improving to 7-0 in his last 10 starts. After Brad Boxberger worked out of an eighth-inning jam, Jake McGee got three outs for his 14th save and complete a four-hitter. "What can I say, man?" Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "It really lived up to the billing prior to the game. Just happy we won." Kevin Kiermaier, inserted as a defensive replacement in right field, made diving catch on Rajai Davis flare with a runner on second and one out in the eighth. Price, traded to the Tigers as part of a three-team deal on July 31, got a standing ovation while taking his warmup throws before the bottom of the first. "Thats probably as good as Ive pitched in a game that went my way," Price said. "Its the least amount of hits Ive ever given up." Price, taken first overall by Tampa Bay in the 2007 draft, got the save in the Rays Game 7 victory over Boston in the 2008 AL championship series and was the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner. "All the stuff leading up to the game was awesome," Cobb said. "Definitely, David deserved everything he got from the crowd and leading up to the game with all the hype. Once it became game-time, the facts are were streaking in the wrong direction a little bit and we definitely needed the win." Tampa Bay had lost four in a row after becoming just the fourth big league team to reach .500 in the same season after dropping 18-games under the break-even mark. The Rays lead the AL with 16 shutouts. "Classic pitchers duel," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. Alex Avila walked and Suarez singled to open the third, but Cobb got a double-play grounder from Davis and Ian Kinslers grounder. The Tigers also failed score in the seventh when J.D. Martinez struck out and Nick Castellanos hit a flyball with runners on second and third. TRAINERS ROOM Tigers: Miguel Cabrera was the DH one day after aggravating an old right ankle injury sliding at home plate Wednesday night. "Generally speaking hes fine," Ausmus said. ... ONE-HIT SHOW The Rays are the first team since the 1915 St. Louis Terriers of the Federal League to win and lose a one-hit game during the same season. Tampa Bay allowed one hit in a 3-2 loss to Oakland on May 21. UP NEXT Tigers: Detroit heads to Minnesota for a four-game series that begins Friday night. In the end, Mike Weir didnt win the HP Byron Nelson. And yet he emerged from the tournament with perhaps something just as important as a first-place cheque and a trophy. Weir got a sign, an indication that all the work he put in, all the hours he spent on the range, the rehab he did after elbow surgery, the tinkering with clubs and instructors, and fighting off the naysayers who told him he was done, has been worth it. Sure it was just one tournament and it will take a few more solid performances to show that the magic has returned for good for Canadas favourite lefthander, but if nothing else, Weir can claim salvation. He knows that he can do it, play golf on the PGA Tour at the highest level. Weir led the tournament early on Sunday, rattling off four birdies in the first five holes. Bogeys at six and nine dropped him out of top spot and although he fought back valiantly at the end, his run came up just short. Brendan Todd pulled out a two-shot win with a sparkling bogey-free final round. For many, Weirs performance was a surprise. But for some time now, hes has been telling all that his ball-striking has been in form but an uncooperative putter is all thats been holding him back. At the Masters there were blips that proved what he was saying. He climbed to within a shot of the lead during the second round and he had three solid rounds at the Wells Fargo before being derailed with a final-round 77. This week, it finally worked, thanks in part to exchanging an oversized putter grip with a well-worn, thin one that was on an old putter. He finished second in Strokes Gained – Putting and first in Putts in Greens in Regulation. Despite his confidence and unwavering optimism, Weir has, at times, questioned his future during his struggles. Over the past four years, hes had doubts. There were doubts when he missed 18 straight cuts and fell outside the top 1,000 in the Official World Golf Ranking. There were doubts when he had to use up two career money list exemptions to keep playing. There were doubts when he earned a grand total of $23,312 over a two-year stretch in 2011-12. But Mike Weir never lost hope. He believed he would get back, if not to the point of winning another major then at least to where he could compete on the PGA Tour. The amount of time Weir put into his game, to trying to find an answer would wear out most professionals. And to be sure, there were a few dead ends he went down. But thats all now in the past. Weir said he has no plans to look in the rear-view mirror. "I dont think I will, to be honest," said Weir on the last four years. "Im here now and Im pushing forward. Ive been asked that question a lot, Ive answered it a lot. I am where I am now and Im pushing forward. Im not going to reflect on the past; thats history now. Im playing good golf and I want to keep that going." Still, he hasnt forgotten just how difficult this stretch has been. And as his game deteriorated after hitting a root at the 2011 Heritage, the questions increased, questions about his game and his ability to still compete. "I just knew that it was inevitable," Weir said of the constant inquiry. "I didnt take offence to it. It was matter of fact – I was playing poorly. I was trying to dig myself out of it. I didnt have any explanation for it except what got me into it, which was obviously the elbow issue, having surgery then trying to play through that and then basically being afraid to hit the ground, the bad habits I got into and probably coming back a little bit early." The bad habits piled on. One caused another and then another. At times, Weir struggled with the driver so badly, it was frightening. During one round where he shot 78, one of his playing partners told me later that if his short game wasnt all-world, Weir might have shot 90. But he stuck with it, kept working and now is finally seeing the fruits of his labour. "I dont know if my swing is that much different really," said Weir. "There are some aspects of my game, being a little older, that arent as dynamic as they used to be. But at the same time there are things that are a little better. I have a little better understanding of things. Ive learned a lot from a couple of teachers Ive used the past couple of years. I think thats helped me too." The finish provided a long list of accomplishments for Weir: His first top 10 since 2010; the first time hes led a tournament since 2007; the first time since last years John Deere that hes had four rounds in the 60s; a cheque for $745,200 (US), and a move of 100 spots on the FedEx Cup point list to 87th. While there are no guarantees, it should be enough to allow him to keep his playing privileges for the 2014-15 season. Of course all those are just numbers. What truly matters most for Mike Weir is being able to play golf and enjoy himself once again. The smile as he walked off the 18th green on Sunday was evidence of that. Mario Chalmers Jersey .J. Hardy finally got in on the fun Saturday, against a likely opponent. Mike Bibby Jersey . Next week, hell try to add to the list. A Stanley Cup champion as a rookie, Seguin followed that up by becoming the youngest player to lead the Boston Bruins in scoring. Each week, The Reporters put their thumbs out to the good and the bad in the world of sports. This week, they discuss standout moments from the NHL and NBA Drafts, the Coyotes speaking frankly and FIFAs famous foam. Bruce Arthur, Toronto Star: My thumb is up to the NBA. Heres why. The NBA draft is a show about possibilities, and thats fun. Then, Thursday night, midway through the first round, Adam Silver stopped the proceedings to tell a story about a prospect named Isaiah Austin, whose career ended last week after he was diagnosed with a disease called Marfan Syndrome. Then Silver stepped up to make Austin a ceremonial pick on behalf of the entire Association. They took a moment about the cruel end of possibility, and the NBA made it beautiful. Best moment in draft history, hands down. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Don Maloney, general manager of the newly named Arizona Coyotes - and yeah, that sounds weird - for his unusual honesty in explaining why the club has chosen to buy out top-line centre, Mike Ribeiro. Normally youd get a little “blah blah blah” from an NHL GM on why a player was being let go. But Maloney was more than clear here: he said the team didnt want to put up with Ribeiros behavioral issues, could not tolerate them going forward and could not have him part of the team anymore. The Coyotes, who couldnt afford lunch a year or two ago let alone buying someone out, will be paying Ribeiro $2 million a year for the next six years just to go away.dddddddddddd Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to one of the great sporting advances of the past decade. Baseballs expanded replay? Advanced stats? Heck, no. Im talking about the so-called felony foam world cup referees have been spraying on the field to mark the spot for free kicks and, more importantly, delineate where defenders can set their wall. This low-tech marvel, which looks like shaving cream and dissipates in a minute, eliminates time wasting and the inevitable cheating by defenders who try to creep closer to the spot. While baseball needed a replay room in New York, FIFA found an inexpensive way to literally lay down the law. The gimmick belongs in the sports hall of foam. Sorry. Dave Naylor, TSN: My thumb is up to the sons of athletes who chose their own path to make a name for themselves. Im refering to the selection of Elfrid Payton Jr. in this weeks NBA Draft, going 10th overall to the Philadelphia 76ers. Payton is the son of CFL Hall-of-Famer Elfrid Payton - better known as SWAC to some - who played for five CFL teams including Baltimore, Montreal and Winnipeg. Like recent NHL draft picks Darnell Nurse and Seth Jones - whose fathers played in the CFL and NBA respectively - Payton put his good athletic genes to use in another sport. Its always a nice story to see a young athlete follow in his fathers footsteps. But its a little more interesting to see them go their own way. Matias Laba is headed to the Vancouver Whitecaps. After reports emerged on Tuesday that the Toronto FC midfielder would head to Vancouver on loan, the team confirmed on Wednesday that they had, in fact, traded for the Argentine designated player. Toronto will receive future considerations. Laba came to Toronto last season from Argentinos Juniors and started all 16 of his appearances with the club last term. With the acquisitions of a trio of designated players this offseason in Brazilian striker Gilberto, American international midfielder Michael Bradly and striker Jermain Defoe of Tottenham, TFC had one more designated player than the three allowed by Major League Soccer rules and Laba was the odd man out. Whitecaps manager Carl Robinson, a former TFC midfielder himself, believes that Laba can help the Vancouver midfield immediately. "Matias is a promising young talent and we are excited to have him join our club," said Robinson in a statement. "He is a hard, aggressive player who brings a lot of energy to the pitch and although he is only 22, he is a natural leader on the field." The Whitecaps open up the MLS regular season on March 8 at home against New York Red Bulls. Bobby Hebert Jersey . Custom New Orleans Saints Jerseys . Sixteen teams have moved on. Sixteen teams have gone home.Toronto, ON - Rob Blake, Peter Forsberg, Dominik Hasek and Mike Modano were among those inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday. Joining the four players in the 2014 class is the late Pat Burns, who was enshrined as a coach in the builder category, and referee Bill McCreary. Hasek played nine seasons professionally in the Czech League before making his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1990-91 season. He was the backup to Ed Belfour, and played only 25 games over two seasons with the team. A 1992 trade to the Buffalo Sabres gave Hasek the opportunity to emerge as a starting goaltender. Hasek took on that role when Grant Fuhr went down with an injury. In 1994, he won his first of six Vezina Trophies as the leagues best goaltender. He also won the Hart Trophy as the leagues MVP in 1997 and 1998 -- the first time a goaltender had won that trophy since Jacques Plante in 1962. He earned the nickname The Dominator during his time with the Sabres. There were people who didnt like my style, but there were a lot of others who encouraged me to play the way that I did, said Hasek. The Sabres traded Hasek to the Detroit Red Wings prior to the start of the 2001-02 season. He played for the Red Wings from 2001-2008, where he won two championships (2002, 2008). In 735 NHL games, Hasek recorded 389 wins (11th place all-time), 223 losses, 82 ties to go along with 81 shutouts. My path here has been paved with kindness and support for a large number of people and I wish to thank them all, said Hasek. There were so many people who supported me and helped me become the player that I was. Forsberg joined the NHL after playing five seasons in the Swedish Elite league. He was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 1991, but became part of the massive package used to acquire the rights to Eric Lindros from the Quebec Nordiques in 1992. In 708 career games over 14 seasons with the Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche, Flyers and Nashville Predators, Forsberg recorded 249 goals and 636 assists. A two-time Stanley Cup champion in 1996 and 2001 with Colorado, Forsberg also won the Hart Trophy in 2003. Forsberg also represented Sweden in international play, including four Olympic Winter Games, at which he won gold medals in 1994 and 2006. He joins Borje Salming and Mats Sundin as the only Swedes in the Hall of Fame. Im very proud to be the third Swede to be inducted, said Forsberg. Growing up I looked up to those guys and it makes me so happy to be included with those guys. It was always an honor to represent my country. Modano pllayed primarily for the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars franchise, with whom he played 21 of his 22 NHL seasons.dddddddddddd. He holds the NHL record for most goals (561) and points (1,374) by an American-born player. Modano added 58 goals and 88 assists in 176 playoff games. He helped the Stars win the Stanley Cup in 1999. Its hard to put into words what it means to be in the same room as some of the greatest players the world has ever seen, said Modano. None of the great years would have been possible without the coaches and players I had the honor to play with. Blake had 240 goals and 537 assists in 1,270 games with the Kings, Avalanche and Sharks. He won the Norris Trophy in 1997-98 and the Stanley Cup in 2001 with Colorado. He also won gold with Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. One of the things I took pride in throughout my career was being a good teammate, said Blake. Family, teammates and friends are always going to be there for you and a lot of the times I was playing for them. Burns started his 14-year NHL coaching career with the Montreal Canadiens in 1988 -- winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHLs Coach of the Year in his first season. He coached in 1,019 games with the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Bruins and Devils. His career record stands at 501 wins, 350 losses, 161 ties and 14 overtime losses. The three-time Jack Adams Award winner won the Stanley Cup with the Devils in 2003. A third battle with cancer finally ended Pats life on November 19, 2010. He was a very disciplined coach and was honest with his players 100 percent of the time, said Lou Lamoriello, president and general manager of the Devils. He would gain their respect so that they would be accountable to themselves and their team. This caps off a tremendous career. McCreary was elected in the referee/linesman category. He officiated 1,700 regular season games, 282 playoff games and one All-Star game before ending his career in 2011. Internationally, McCreary worked the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, including the gold medal games at both tournaments. My dream was to play in the national hockey league, same as any other boy, said McCreary. After my junior career wound down, I was encouraged to go into refereeing and have a chance to stay in the game. Also part of this years Hall ceremonies were USA Today hockey reporter Kevin Allen, the winner of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award for excellence in hockey journalism, and Chicago Blackhawks play-by-play announcer Pat Foley, who received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for broadcasting. ALBANY, N.Y. -- Any chance the St. Johns IceCaps had of stealing a second American Hockey League road playoff victory was ruined by penalties. The Albany Devils were awarded nine power-play opportunities Saturday night and cashed in three of them to defeat the IceCaps 4-2. After the IceCaps 2-1 victory Friday night, the best-of-five series is tied at one game apiece as the teams move to St. Johns, N.L., for the remaining games. "We have to stay more disciplined," said defenceman Brenden Kichton, who scored both St. Johns goals. "Youre not going to win hockey games when youre in the box, but we to have credit them. They did a good job on their power play. They got three goals out of it, and thats not how we play to win." The IceCaps, who allowed the Devils only two power-play chances in Game 1, still got out of Albany with a split. "Its a five-game series here, as everybody says, and we were able to get the one game in here," St. Johns coach Keith McCambridge said. "We would have really liked to get this game. Well have a chance to refocus here and get ourselves back in the right direction for Wednesday." The Devils, buoyed by the largest home crowd at 8,026 in Albanys 21-year AHL history, made their potential path to the next round a little more negotiable. A loss would have forced Albany to sweep three games at St. Johns in order to advance. "Going into that building and having to win all three would definitely be pretty tough," Devils coach Rick Kowalsky said. "We said before, you cant sit here and talk about a must win. We talked about individually and as a team trying to be better than we were last night and realizing that I felt we grew as a team just in that short 60 minutes." Stefan Matteau, Mattias Tedenby and Scott Timmins had Albanys power-play goals. Kelly Zajac assisted on two of them, winning face-offs both times on the St. Johns half of the ice. Tedenby snapped a 2-2 tie at 8:08 of the second. Zajac won a draw just outside the IceCaps blue-line and skated in a 2-on-1 with Tedenby, who took the pass and beat St. Johns goaltender Michael Hutchinson from in close. Timmins got an insurance goal with 9:59 remaining in the third. "We would have liked not to be on the short end of the penalties for a good majority of the night," McCambridge said. "Weve got to make sure we are in control. Weve got to make sure we realize where we are in the game and try to keep it 5-on-5." St. Johns had only four power-play opportunities. Kichton first goal bounced in off the skate of Devils defenceman Jon Merrill. He also converted on a power play early in the second period, capitalizing when Albany defenceman Seth Helgeson fell at the blue-line. Keith Kinkaid, who gave up a soft goal with 23.1 seconds remaining Friday night, got his first professional victory in goal. Both he and Hutchinson made 30 saves. "There were a lot of opportunities tonight," Kichton said, "and we didnt cash in on those." Edwin Encarnacion had a two-out, bases loaded two-RBI double in the third inning. LONG POND, Pa. -- Denny Hamlin won the pole the first time he ever raced at Pocono Raceway. Eight years later, Hamlin still had the speed in the No. 11 Toyota to take the top spot at the triangle track. Hamlin turned a track record-lap of 181.415 mph Friday to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup pole, a throwback to the times he dominated qualifying at one of his best tracks. Hamlin is a four-time winner at Pocono, matching his Martinsville mark for most career wins at a track. He swept two Pocono races on its former rugged surface from the pole in 2006. He also won races on the 2 1/2-mile track in 2009 and 2010. "I hope this track has aged a little bit," he said, "because when it was old and worn out was when I was really good at the track." With blistering speeds, Hamlin zipped his way to his second track record and pole of the season after topping the field at Bristol. Hamlin has 19 poles in 304 career Cup starts. Hamlin hasnt had much success with Joe Gibbs Racing at Pocono since 2010, finishing in the top 10 onlt twice and crashing out twice -- including a 43rd-place run last August. "We havent been that strong here since the repave," he said. "Its just a handful of things that make you off here and there. These tracks are almost like superspeedways now in the sense that youve got to have the fastest car in the right position to win them. BBack when I was winning in 06 on the old track, you could make up tons of position.dddddddddddd That would never happen today because the cars are running so fast and so equal." Kurt Busch starts second for a needed lift for his Stewart-Haas Racing team. Busch has otherwise struggled outside of the one win that all but locked him into the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. "We came here with a new approach to try to get our front ends to settle into the track a little better," Busch said. "I was really surprised that we had the speed for the pole today in our first attempt to try something a little different. Its great to cash in." Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon completed the top five. Coming off wins in the Coca-Cola 600 and at Dover, Jimmie Johnson will start 20th in his bid for a third straight victory. "I just got too greedy down in two and lost the nose in the corner exit," Johnson said. "I feel bad for my guys, but this ones on me." Keselowski continued his run of qualifying success. Last weeks pole winner at Dover, Keselowski has started third or better in the No. 2 Ford a whopping 10 times in 13 races this season. "Im not sure why, but Im not going to complain about it either," he said. "It does seem qualifying day has been the highlight of our week, for sure." After winning Sundays Heritage Classic game in Vancouver, there is a sense that perhaps the Senators can use that victory as a springboard down the stretch. One would think that winning one of the NHLs signature events – with 50,000 fans watching in the stadium and a larger-than-normal television audience – could propel this team onto a much-needed winning streak. But looking at the brief history of these events, there is hardly any connection between winning an outdoor game and any subsequent success in the NHL. A few years ago, the 2008 Penguins and the 2009 Red Wings each made it to the Stanley Cup Final in the same year after winning the Winter Classic game – although that was more likely the result of having a powerhouse lineup than anything to do with playing in an outdoor game. For the Senators, a better comparable would be to look at some of the less dominant teams that have won an outdoor game and how that affected them immediately afterwards. This season, for example, the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor – but then turned around and lost their next four games. In 2011, the Calgary Flames beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium. The Flames ended up losing three of their next five games, so any momentum they gained from winning the outdoor game was non-existent. The same can be said for the 2003-04 Montreal Canadiens, who beat the Edmonton Oilers in the first-ever outdoor game at Commonwealth Stadium. The Habs managed to win only two of their next five games – although they did manage a pair of ties as well. This season, we even saw the Anaheim Ducks stumble after winning the outdoor game at Dodger Stadium against the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks lost four of their next five games – marking their worst stretch of the regular season. The same thing happened to the 2010 Boston Bruins and the 2011 Washington Capitals – each team lost four of their next five games after winning the Winter Classic. So in many cases, it seems like teams suffer a letdown – rather than an uplift – following a big win in an outdoor game. Heres a look at how every team that has won an outdoor game fared in their next 5 games: 2003-04 Montreal Canadiens – Won Heritage Classic 4-3 at EdmontonNext 5 games: 2-1-2 record 2007-08 Pittsburgh Penguins – Won Winter Classic 2-1 at BuffaloNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record 2008-09 Detroit Red Wings – Won Winter Classic 6-4 at ChicagoNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record 2009-10 Boston Bruins– Won Winter Classic 2-1 at BostonNext 5 games: 1-4-0 record 2010-11 Washigton Capitals – Won Winter Classic 3-1 at PittsburghNext 5 games: 1-2-2 record 2010-11 Calgary Flames – Won Heritage Classic 4-0 at CalgaryNext 5 games: 2-2-1 record 2011-12 New York Rangers – Won Winter Classic 3-2 at PhiladelphiaNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record 2013-14 Toronto Maple Leafs – Won Winter Classic 3-1 at Ann ArborNext 5 games – 1-4-0 record 2013-14 Anaheim Ducks – Won Stadium Series 3-0 at Los AngelesNext 5 games – 1-4-0 record 2013-14 NY Rangers – Swept Stadium Series 7-3 (Devils) and 2-1 (Islanders) at New YorkNext 5 games: 4-1-0 record Chris Doleman Jersey . The Heat are a perfect 7-0 in South Beach this postseason and had a chance Wednesday to advance and get plenty of rest before the NBA Finals begin Thursday. The Pacers werent ready to call it a season. Indiana staved off elimination with a 93-90 Game 5 victory at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in one of the most entertaining playoff games in recent memory. All it took was a Herculean effort from Paul George, a foul-plagued LeBron James and crazy antics from Lance Stephenson, which included, but was not limited to, pinching and blowing in James ear. George was magnificent as he scored 31 of his 37 points after the break, including 21 in the fourth quarter. "I just came out firing. My teammates found me and I got hot," said George, who shot 15-of-28 from the floor. "I felt in rhythm, regardless of who was guarding me. I was just in the zone." The Heat essentially played the entire second and third quarters without James, who battled foul trouble throughout and finished with a career playoff- low seven points on 2-of-10 shooting. "Its not something Im accustomed to," James said of sitting with foul trouble. "I wasnt able to make plays and help our team win." Then, there was Stephenson. The wild-card played a pivotal role in Indianas Game 5 success, despite the silly instance where he blew in James ear, or when he pinched James side, or even when he listened in on a small huddle between Heat coach Erik Spoelsttra and two of his players.dddddddddddd "Just trying to help my team win, whatever it takes. Theres a lot on the line now. Just trying to win games," Stephenson explained. Lost in the bizarre nature of his ways, Stephenson proved to be a huge catalyst in the Pacers comeback. Indiana trailed by nine at the half, then ratcheted up the defensive intensity over the final 24 minutes. Stephenson picked up full court and George manned the passing lanes. They forced turnovers and George finished with six steals. The defensive pressure created easy shots for the Pacers, who scored 31 in the third quarter after posting only 33 in the first half. A George slam off a steal pushed Indianas lead to 77-66 early in the final stanza, but nine consecutive Miami points in less than two minutes brought the Heat right back. Miami never got over the hump -- thanks to George countering nearly every Heat basket with one of his own -- but the visitors closed within 91-90 following Rashard Lewis sixth 3-pointer with 16 seconds to go. The Pacers went 1-for-3 from the foul line over the closing seconds and the Heat had a chance for the tie or the lead. James knifed through the lane, encountered Indiana center Roy Hibbert, kicked it out to an open Chris Bosh in the corner. Bosh missed and the Pacers live to see another day. "Weve been able to win a road game in each playoff series weve been involved in the last two years, and we have a confidence that this series will be the same, that we can go into Game 6 and be able to get a W." Pacers coach Frank Vogel said after practice Thursday. The world will likely see a different Heat team on Friday, one with James making an impact and not in warmups. "Hes going to come out and play with a lot of energy. Im sure hes got a lot built up from not playing much in Game 5," said George. And despite James foul woes, the Heat had a good look at a shot to win the game. But, the Heat werent interested in how close it was without the best player in the world. "Aint no moral victories for us. We win or we lose. Thats it," said James. If the Pacers survive, Game 7 would be Sunday in Indianapolis. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Olivier Hanlan and Patrick Heckmann hit 3-pointers in overtime, Lonnie Jackson made four straight free throws in the final 26.2 seconds, and lowly Boston College stunned top-ranked Syracuse 62-59 on Wednesday night, ending the Oranges unbeaten season. "It was an emotional game for us," BC coach Steve Donahue said after his first Carrier Dome win in eight tries against the Orange. "Its been incredible for these guys to persevere. Weve played well in a lot of games." The Eagles came to town with heavy hearts and a good dose of determination. Longtime basketball media contact and sports information assistant Dick Kelley died last week after a two-year battle with ALS. His funeral was Tuesday and the Eagles, who often visited his apartment, were wearing "DK" patches on their uniforms. "The patch on our chests, toward the end of the game it was like, We cant be denied. DK is looking down on us. Hes got us," said Ryan Anderson. "Its real emotional. Its really going to set in in a couple of hours." Boston College (7-19, 3-10 Atlantic Coast Conference), which had lost five straight, rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to pull off the improbable upset. Syracuse (25-1, 12-1) travels to No. 5 Duke on Saturday night for a rematch of their overtime instant classic on Feb. 1. The loss leaves No. 3 Wichita State (28-0), which beat Loyola of Chicago 88-74 on Wednesday night, as the lone unbeaten in Division I. The Eagles, whose only conference wins this season were over Virginia Tech, beat a No. 1-ranked team for the third time and first since knocking off then-No. 1 North Carolina in 2009. Syracuse, which had won its last two games by a combined three points, shot a season-low 32.2 per cent from the field including going 2 of 12 from 3-point range, its sputtering offence unable to pull off another miracle finish. "When you get in enough of these games, theres going to be one youre not going to make a play. Thats what happens," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "At the end of games, you get into enough of these games, youre not going to win. "Im really happy that weve won 25 games," Boeheim said. "We cant think about that. Weve got to think about what we have to going forward. Weve really got to get better, and I think we will. Its been an unbelievable run, Ive never seen anything like it before. Its remarkable what theyve done." Tied at 50 after two halves played at Boston Colleges deliberate pace, Hanlan and Heckmann hit from long range to give BC a 56-52 lead with 2:56 left, but Tyler Ennis driving layup knotted the score at 56 with 2:09 to play. A free throw by Ennis, from Brampton, Ont., gave the Orange a one-point lead, but Heckmanns backdoor layup put the Eagles back in front with 43.5 seconds left. After a timeout, Ennis threw a pass toward C.J. Fair in the right corner that sailed out of bounds. After the officials initially ruled it was Syracuses ball a video review with 32.dddddddddddd seconds left re-affirmed the call. It didnt matter when Fair missed a drive and Jackson sealed the victory with his clutch free throws. Hanlan finished with 20 points and Jackson had 10. Anderson had nine points and 14 rebounds, but the Eagles won it by going 11 of 22 from behind the arc. They committed 15 turnovers, three after halftime. Fair finished with 20 points on 7-of-23 shooting and had 11 rebounds. Ennis had 14 points and six assists and Jerami Grant finished with 11 points. Syracuse won 58-56 at Pittsburgh a week ago and 56-55 over North Carolina State in the Carrier Dome on Saturday night -- as the Orange had walked a tightrope much of the season. Grants spinning layup on a drive through the lane gave Syracuse a 50-48 lead with 77 seconds left in regulation, but Hanlan tied it with a layup 30 seconds later. After a timeout, Ennis missed a layup attempt but snared his own rebound and Boeheim called a timeout with 20 seconds left to set up a final shot. But Rakeem Christmas missed a hook in the lane just before the buzzer to force overtime. BC was called for two shot-clock violations in the final 5 minutes, squandering a chance to win it in regulation. BC figured to attack the Syracuse zone inside-out with Jackson leading the ACC in shooting at 50 per cent (34 of 68) from behind the arc and Joe Rahon and Hanlan each with 21 3-pointers. Eddie Odio averaging 42.4 per cent from long range, also started. BC trailed by eight points at halftime and by as many 13 in the second half before its outside game came alive. Hanlan hit three from behind the arc and Rahon had two in a 7-minute span to key a 21-8 spurt, and Andersons layup tied it at 41-all with 8:15 left. A 3 by Rahon from the left corner made it 46-42 with 6:09 to go. Syracuse tied it at 46 on Ennis driving layup with 5:09 left, but he committed a turnover on the ensuing possession and Heckmanns layup put BC back in front 48-46 at 3:30. The Orange tied it at 48 on a free throw by Christmas with 2:23 to play. Syracuse started badly, missing its first seven shots and falling behind 7-2 as Jackson drained two 3s in the first 5 minutes. Fair notched the Oranges first basket on a reverse layup at 14:19. Fair, Syracuses leading scorer, had eight of the Oranges first 12 points, but half those points were on free throws as he missed eight of his first 10 shots. Syracuse shot 34.5 per cent (10 of 29) and missed all six attempts from long range in the first half. Grants three-point play gave Syracuse a 25-17 lead at halftime as the Orange held Boston Colleges top scorers in check. Hanlan was 1 of 5 from the field and Anderson 1 of 4. The Orange boosted the lead to 33-20 on Ennis 3 from the wing with 17:25 left. Syracuse won at Boston College a little more than a month ago. The Orange trailed 51-46 with just over 10 minutes to play, then took advantage of their size inside during a 16-1 run over a span of less than 4 minutes and won 69-59.
